Some top tips for keeping healthy and safe on the beach this summer

With summer breaks just around the corner, we’re all grabbing our beach flip flops and heading for the beach and surf – but how do you keep healthy and safe... here’s how.

Perfect Cornish beach

Devon and Cornwall are a hotspot for surfers and beach goers and some of the best beaches can now be checked for the quality of the water in real time on the new beachlive website.

Working in partnership with Surfers Against Sewage, South West Water now provides detailed information via the website on 21 of the SouthWest’s best loved beaches.

The website provides up-to-the-minute data on sea water quality and other information on risks to bathing water quality caused by overflows in the public drainage network.

Great strides have been made in recent years to clean up the UK’s beaches and the South West region now has the most Blue Flag beaches of any region in the UK, but after years of dealing with unwanted infections and illness many people who enter the sea will welcome the opportunity to check the water conditions to help make an informed decision.

Surfers Against Sewage, the environmental pressure group formed by a group of surfers with the aim of improving water quality for all is also providing a text message service to people who register on their site. No doubt there will be an App along sometime soon too.

For those not planning to visit one of the 21 beaches covered by the website, there is a wealth of information readily available for the entire coastline of the UK on the Enviroment Agencies website. Whilst the information is not quite so up to the minute it does provide a good indication of water quality.

Ensuring you visit a clean beach is only a part of staying safe this summer. How to behave in a safe and responsible way at the beach is just as vital.

Beach safety informationThe surfhiresafety website which is run by the RNLI, the lifeguard provider, at most of the beaches in the UK, is a great source of information on how to make sure your experience in the sea and surf is a good one for all.
